The Government has reiterated its dedication to creating an investor-friendly environment in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector, with a focus on empowering private players, enhancing clean energy access, and driving job creation, particularly for the youth.
Speaking during a site visit to the Lake Gas facility in Kilifi County, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi emphasized the national strategy to scale up LPG uptake as a cleaner, safer, and more affordable alternative to traditional fuels.
“This is about creating an environment where private sector investment can thrive, leading to innovation, expanded infrastructure, and sustainable job creation,” said Wandayi. “The arrival of the first LPG vessel in two weeks will mark a significant milestone in this journey.”
The Lake Gas facility is currently undergoing its second phase of development, which includes the addition of 15,000 metric tons of storage capacity to its existing 10,000 metric tons—bringing the total to 25,000 metric tons. This expansion will significantly bolster Kenya’s energy infrastructure and ensure a reliable supply of LPG nationwide.
Wandayi noted that increased competition and supply would ultimately reduce LPG prices for consumers. “By opening up the sector, the forces of supply and demand will help bring prices to an affordable level,” he stated.
Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban underscored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders. “We are working together to fast-track the national LPG strategy, with a focus on inclusive and sustainable energy access,” he said.
Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro pledged the County’s support for a conducive investment environment, while urging investors to prioritize local employment and skills development.
Lake Gas’ Manager of Supply and Operations, Moris Mutiso, assured the community that 70% of the workforce will be sourced from Kilifi County. He also projected over 1,000 indirect jobs would be created through the project, particularly in transport and logistics.
The Lake Gas expansion exemplifies a public-private partnership model aimed at driving clean energy adoption, economic growth, and community empowerment.
