The Government has reiterated its commitment to fostering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and supporting grassroots development, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has said. Speaking at Nyamache Grounds in Bobasi Constituency, Kisii County, during a women empowerment programme, Wetangula underscored the government’s intention to uplift communities through structured, community-based initiatives.
He emphasized that the Government is focused on promoting economic independence and self-reliance by encouraging the formation and support of organized local groups. These groups, he said, play a crucial role in driving sustainable development and reducing reliance on external support.
“This is being done by promoting structured, community-based groups designed to foster economic independence and self-reliance,” Wetangula stated.
The Speaker also took the opportunity to highlight Kisii County’s rich agricultural potential, pointing out the region’s fertile soils and consistent rainfall. He noted that the area is well suited for the cultivation of bananas, avocados, sugarcane, and various other crops. According to Wetangula, investing in agro-based SMEs in such regions would not only boost local economies but also contribute significantly to national food security and export growth.
Wetangula was joined by several national and local leaders who echoed his sentiments and expressed their support for women empowerment and grassroots development initiatives. The leaders also engaged with residents on the importance of collaboration between government and community members to drive progress and innovation.
The event served as a platform to encourage the empowerment of women and youth through entrepreneurship and skill-building programmes, which are vital in tackling unemployment and poverty.
As the country continues to prioritize inclusive economic growth, the government’s renewed focus on SMEs and grassroots empowerment stands out as a key pillar in achieving long-term development.
