President William Ruto made an impromptu visit to the ongoing Kilimani Police Housing Project, which will deliver 542 new housing units under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP). The initiative, part of the broader National Police Housing Programme, is designed to provide dignified and modern accommodation for police officers across the country.
Speaking during the inspection, the President emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the living conditions of police officers, many of whom currently reside in aging and inadequate facilities. “We must purpose to improve the living conditions of our police officers. A majority of our officers currently reside in aging and inadequate housing at police stations and posts. As a government, we will not rest until we provide better living standards for them,” he said.
The Kilimani development will feature a mix of housing units to cater to varying needs: 88 studio units, 86 one-bedroom apartments, 176 two-bedroom units, and 192 three-bedroom apartments. Beyond housing, the project includes a suite of critical amenities such as a commercial centre, hospital, Early Childhood Development (ECD) school, social hall, gym, subordinate staff housing, and gatehouses.
The President noted that the project reflects his administration’s wider agenda of using housing as a vehicle for economic empowerment. “We are implementing our agenda and manifesto through housing. We are committed to creating jobs for the youth and ensuring that Jua Kali artisans, mama mboga, and MSMEs benefit from this programme,” he added.
The Affordable Housing Programme has been a key pillar of the Kenya Kwanza government, aiming not only to reduce the housing deficit but also to stimulate job creation and local enterprise development. The Kilimani Police Housing Project is one among several underway across the country, signaling a shift in how the government seeks to uplift essential service providers.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for police officers, boost morale, and improve service delivery in the security sector.
