The government has completed the construction of 220 affordable housing units, a key milestone in its ongoing efforts to provide decent and dignified homes to Kenyans under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP). The project, which is scheduled for official launch in the coming days, includes a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units tailored to meet the diverse needs of Kenyan families.
Speaking on the development, Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga highlighted the project’s significance in enhancing homeownership among ordinary citizens. He reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring all Kenyans have access to quality, affordable homes.
“These projects are for Kenyans. We have made deliberate efforts to ensure every citizen can save, purchase and own a housing unit as they pursue their aspirations,” said PS Hinga. “The successful completion of these units is a strong indicator of our commitment to the affordable housing agenda.”
The Affordable Housing Programme is a flagship initiative under the government’s broader Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). It seeks to address the country’s housing deficit by constructing housing units across all 47 counties, with priority given to low- and middle-income earners.
According to the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, the AHP not only aims to provide shelter but also catalyzes job creation, supports local manufacturing, and stimulates economic growth. It is implemented through partnerships with private developers, financial institutions, and county governments to ensure sustainable delivery and accessibility.
The 220-unit project is part of a larger pipeline of developments currently underway nationwide. With a growing number of Kenyans registering for housing through the Boma Yangu platform, demand for affordable homes remains high, reinforcing the importance of continuous delivery.
As the government prepares to launch the project, attention now shifts to expanding similar initiatives and making homeownership a reality for millions more. The AHP continues to offer hope to Kenyans seeking decent housing and stands as a symbol of the government’s resolve to improve living standards for all.
