The government has strongly pushed back against claims that the Mt Kenya region is being sidelined in its development agenda.
Speaking on Sunday, September 28, 2025, during a church service at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mweiga, Kieni Constituency, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei refuted allegations that President William Ruto’s administration had shifted focus away from the region following the ouster of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“There is no truth in the claims that this region has been forgotten. The people of Mt. Kenya contributed significantly to the formation of this government, and development is being implemented equally across the country,” Koskei said.
His remarks come in the wake of growing discontent among a section of Mt Kenya leaders, who accuse the government of sidelining them in national appointments and projects. Some argue that the broad-based government has shifted attention elsewhere, despite the region’s overwhelming support in the last general election.
Koskei, however, reassured residents that the administration remains committed to equitable development. He emphasized that Mt Kenya’s pivotal role in shaping the current government cannot be overlooked and that the region stands to benefit from the same level of investment as other parts of the country.
Recent data from TIFA indicates growing dissatisfaction in Mt Kenya. According to the survey, opposition to the broad-based government is highest in the region at 83 per cent. Only 11 per cent of residents expressed support, while 6 per cent remained undecided.
The survey underscores the growing political tension in the area, as leaders and residents continue to demand a bigger share of national resources. Despite this, Koskei’s assurance sought to reaffirm the government’s commitment to balanced growth and unity across all regions.
