The government has announced plans to acquire land in several counties, including Kiambu, Machakos, Kwale, and Kisumu, to facilitate the implementation of major infrastructure projects aimed at improving water supply, sanitation, and road networks.
In Kiambu County, the National Land Commission (NLC) has issued a notice of inquiry for parcels of land required to complete the Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project. The project, implemented by the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), targets land in the Chania and Mataara areas. Once completed, it will boost water supply to Nairobi, Thika, and Juja. Landowners along the project’s alignment have been asked to inspect plans at NLC offices and prepare compensation documents.
In Machakos County, the government is set to acquire land for the Machakos Sanitation Project, also being undertaken on behalf of AWWDA. The project aims to expand sewerage and wastewater management systems within the county. Public hearings will be held to allow affected individuals to file compensation claims before the Commission.
In Kwale County, additional land parcels have been earmarked for the construction of the Kwale–Kinango (B92) Road, a project under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). The road will enhance mobility to markets and connect the region to key economic areas such as the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone and Mombasa Port.
Meanwhile, in Kisumu County, NLC has announced plans to acquire land for the reconstruction of the Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet (B132) Road. The project will ease movement between the sugar belt and Kisumu City, reducing transport costs and improving access to markets.
Affected landowners have been directed to submit written claims, identification documents, proof of ownership, and bank details to the NLC to facilitate compensation.
