The government is set to recruit 100,000 youth as the Kazi Mtaani program expands beyond Nairobi to all 47 counties. This announcement was made by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo during an interview on Ramogi FM on Tuesday night.
Omollo revealed that the program, which resumed in Nairobi in June after a budget-related pause, had now secured the necessary funds to roll out across the country. “Kazi Mtaani is set to resume in other counties, and the government has a target of recruiting 100,000 youth into the program,” he said.
The Kazi Mtaani initiative, now integrated under the NYOTA Programme, aims to provide both employment and technical skills to the youth. According to PS Omollo, the government intends to recruit at least 70 youth per ward, translating to about 100,000 participants.
Under the NYOTA component, 90,000 youth will undergo technical and vocational training to equip them with practical skills for the job market. Additionally, at least 100,000 young people will receive business funding and support to enhance their economic empowerment.
The government will also recognise prior learning for youth with experience gained through apprenticeships or informal work, awarding them certificates to boost their employability.
Omollo disclosed that the verification process had attracted an overwhelming 400,000 applicants, far exceeding initial projections. He noted that efforts are underway to secure more funding to ensure the remaining 300,000 youth also benefit from the program’s incentives, training, and business empowerment opportunities.
Turning to security matters, the PS announced plans to launch a mobile app to enable citizens to report road-related incidents directly online. He also confirmed progress in police modernisation, including transitioning from traditional Occurrence Books (OB) to a Digital OB system to promote transparency and accountability.
