Tragedy struck in Chepalungu, Bomet County, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, when a Grade 5 pupil was electrocuted while returning home from school.
The ten-year-old, Elisha Kiprotich, of Kapkulumben Primary School, reportedly climbed a wild fruit tree near his home to pick fruit. While in the tree, he came into contact with a live electricity cable that had become entangled in the branches.
Elisha was electrocuted instantly, dying at the top of the tree.
Quick Response from Authorities
Cheleget Location Chief, Daniel Tulmaat, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. He said local authorities called Kenya Power, who promptly switched off electricity to allow for the safe removal of the boy’s body.
“The efforts to remove him from the tree started after we ensured the power was off,” Chief Tulmaat explained.
Elisha’s body was taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Calls for Action
Chief Tulmaat has urged Kenya Power to carry out regular inspections and line patrols. He noted that overgrown trees near power lines pose serious risks to residents.
“I urge Kenya Power to frequently patrol power lines and fix any faulty connections to prevent loss of lives,” said Tulmaat.
Advice to Parents
The chief also appealed to parents to closely monitor their children and warn them against climbing trees near power lines.
Residents of Chepalungu have joined the call for stricter safety measures around electricity infrastructure. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for awareness and preventive action to protect children and communities living near power lines.
