As Kenya celebrates its 62nd Madaraka Day on June 1, 2025, all eyes are on Homa Bay County, which is rapidly emerging as a regional economic hub thanks to bold investments in the blue economy. From modern infrastructure to fisheries development, the county is positioning itself as a leader in leveraging Lake Victoria’s resources for sustainable growth.
In an exclusive interview with KBC Channel 1, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa affirmed that all preparations for the national celebrations at the newly renovated Raila Odinga Stadium have gone smoothly. “We are fully set to host the country for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations,” said Mworoa, adding that thousands of guests are expected to converge in Homa Bay for the national event.
At the heart of this transformation is a raft of ongoing development projects designed to unlock the county’s economic potential. A key highlight is the construction of the Homa Bay modern fish market, which aims to boost fish trade by providing better storage, processing, and marketing facilities for local fishers. In addition, the ambitious Kabonyo-Kanyagwal Aquaculture Centre of Excellence is set to revolutionize aquaculture in the region.
The aquaculture centre, currently 30 percent complete, will specialize in the production of fingerlings, training of fishermen, and development of skilled marine personnel. Mworoa noted that the contractor is working tirelessly to ensure the project is finalized by the end of 2025. Once operational, the centre is expected to be a game changer for the local economy, enhancing food security and generating employment opportunities.
Complementing these flagship projects are other developments such as road upgrades, a new pier to support water transport, affordable housing projects, and the recently refurbished Raila Odinga Stadium. These investments are not only reshaping the county’s economic landscape but also aligning with the government’s broader agenda to promote equitable regional development through the blue economy.
With these milestones, Homa Bay is not just celebrating Madaraka Day it is symbolizing a bold leap into the future of economic empowerment and sustainable development.
