The Affordable Housing Project in Vihiga County is nearing completion, with 88 percent of the work already done, Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced on Monday. Launched in September 2023, the housing initiative is set to redefine the landscape of Majengo township, providing quality, low-cost housing to residents in line with the government’s affordable housing agenda.
According to PS Omollo, the project has now entered the final phase of construction, with finishing works progressing swiftly. Key ongoing activities include the casting of a retaining wall, installation of critical civil works, electrical wiring, plumbing, and mechanical fittings. Additionally, painting and welding of doors and windows are being finalized to ensure the units are both aesthetically pleasing and secure.
Environmental considerations have not been left behind. Excavation for a septic tank is currently underway, a step that underscores the project’s commitment to functionality and adherence to environmental standards.
The housing complex comprises nine residential blocks, offering a total of 220 modern units tailored to meet the diverse needs of the population. These include one bedsitter block with 60 units, a block of 20 one-bedroom units, five blocks with 100 two-bedroom units, and two blocks featuring 40 spacious three-bedroom units.
This development is part of the national government’s broader Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), which aims to address the country’s housing deficit and promote sustainable urban growth. PS Omollo emphasized that the Vihiga project exemplifies how well-planned housing developments can uplift communities, create jobs, and stimulate local economies.
Once completed, the Vihiga Affordable Housing project is expected to offer decent and dignified living spaces for hundreds of families, while also transforming the face of Majengo. With its mix of unit types, the development caters to individuals, young families, and larger households, ensuring inclusivity and diversity in the community.
The government remains committed to delivering similar projects across the country as part of President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), prioritizing the provision of accessible and quality housing for all Kenyans.
