Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Joho, has announced a series of ambitious reforms aimed at transforming Kenya’s mining sector into a powerful engine of economic growth. Speaking during a dialogue with members of the West Pokot Youth Association, Joho emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, particularly in mineral-rich regions like West Pokot.
Joho highlighted that the government is implementing targeted measures to ensure that the mining sector contributes meaningfully to local economies and national development. Central to these reforms is the organization of artisanal and small-scale miners into cooperatives. According to the CS, this approach will enable miners to benefit from economies of scale, access better markets, and negotiate fairer prices for their minerals.
“By forming cooperatives and establishing mineral aggregation centers, we can ensure that small-scale miners are protected from exploitation and receive fair value for their efforts,” Joho stated.
The CS also revealed plans to attract credible large-scale investors to the region, emphasizing the importance of responsible investment that benefits local communities. Such investors will be expected to create employment opportunities, pay appropriate royalties, and develop key infrastructure, including roads and mineral processing facilities.
Joho underscored the importance of involving youth in the transformation of the mining sector. He urged young people to educate their communities about the vast potential of mining to alleviate poverty and boost economic resilience.
“This sector can be a game changer if managed well. We need the youth to lead awareness and take up opportunities available through training, investment, and cooperative ventures,” he said.
The engagement with West Pokot youth forms part of a broader national strategy to enhance community participation and promote equitable distribution of mining benefits. With Kenya’s untapped mineral wealth and a population eager for opportunities, the reforms spearheaded by Joho are poised to usher in a new era of prosperity—if implemented effectively and inclusively.
