Stanbic Bank has appointed Dr. Joshua Oigara as the Regional Chief Executive (RCE) for East Africa, effective September 1, 2025, subject to regulatory approval.
Oigara, who currently serves as Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Kenya, will assume the regional role while continuing his leadership of the Kenyan subsidiary. His appointment follows the planned exit of Patrick Mweheire, who has held the regional chief executive position for the past five years. Mweheire will step down on August 31, 2025, but will continue to serve as Chief Executive of Stanbic Kenya Holdings.
In a statement, Stanbic Bank’s leadership commended Mweheire for his “exemplary leadership in building a well-positioned franchise in the East African region” and expressed confidence that Oigara would build on that strong foundation.
Oigara joined Stanbic Bank Kenya as Chief Executive on December 1, 2022, and was appointed Executive Director on January 1, 2023. Since then, he has played a key role in steering the bank through a dynamic economic landscape and strengthening its market presence.
Before joining Stanbic, Oigara was Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at KCB Group, a position he held for nearly a decade. During his tenure, he was instrumental in expanding the bank’s regional footprint and driving sustainable growth.
Oigara’s leadership credentials are further underscored by his extensive academic and professional background. He holds an MBA with distinction in International Business Management from Edith Cowan University in Australia, a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi, and is an Advanced Management Programme graduate from INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France. He is also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya and a member of both the Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
In addition to his executive role, Oigara serves as a Non-Executive Director of Stanbic Nominees Limited.
His appointment marks a significant step for Stanbic as it seeks to strengthen its leadership and deepen its presence across East Africa. With his wealth of experience and proven track record, Oigara is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Stanbic’s regional ambitions.
