Kakamega County has declared 265 vacancies for doctors, nurses, and specialists in a major recruitment drive aimed at boosting healthcare services across the region. The announcement was made through a notice by the County Public Service Board on Monday, urging qualified applicants to apply before the October 10, 2025, deadline.
The county revealed that the recruitment will target a wide range of healthcare professionals to strengthen staffing in both primary and referral health facilities. Among the positions available, 18 medical officers will be hired to address staffing gaps in public hospitals.
Other critical cadres include pharmacists, dental officers, nurses, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and clinical officers. The notice also listed opportunities for medical laboratory officers (4), radiographers (11), assistant health records officers (14), and mortuary attendants (3).
Kakamega has faced serious healthcare challenges in recent years, including a doctors’ strike that ended in May 2025 after a return-to-work agreement was signed. The deal addressed key issues such as health insurance, promotions, and the conversion of locum doctors to permanent terms.
In addition to hospital-based staff, the county is seeking to recruit 13 community oral health officers and 14 public health officers. These professionals will support preventive healthcare initiatives and expand outreach in rural areas in line with Kenya’s universal health coverage (UHC) goals.
