The government has reassured residents of Kakamega County that the recent Ksh.683 billion gold discovery in Isulu–Bushiangala will translate into tangible benefits for local communities. Speaking during the Western Region Media Projects Tour, Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura highlighted measures to ensure the project drives economic transformation rather than conflict.
Dr. Mwaura explained that Kenya’s mining law guarantees a clear framework for revenue sharing. Under the law, 70% of mining proceeds will go to the national government, 20% to Kakamega County, and 10% directly to local communities. Additionally, mining companies are mandated to allocate 1% of their annual gross sales to community development projects.
The funds will be managed by a 14-member community committee tasked with prioritizing investments in schools, health centers, roads, water systems, and environmental protection initiatives. Dr. Mwaura also assured locals that no one will be displaced without proper compensation, with government teams already on-site to oversee a transparent and humane process.
“These measures are crucial for boosting the economy, strengthening local development, and ensuring mining operations proceed smoothly and transparently,” he noted.
The government emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza Administration is committed to equitable development. Through ongoing national programs in agriculture, education, trade, infrastructure, and markets, every region is being supported to create jobs, reduce poverty, and improve livelihoods.
The Western region, including Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and Busia, has benefited from significant government investment, with more than 77 major projects currently underway. These initiatives include gold processing plants, roads, bridges, airstrips, industrial parks, affordable housing, water supply expansions, modern markets, and energy projects.
Dr. Mwaura added that the media tour allows residents to see firsthand the government’s investments and fosters a sense of ownership, ensuring that the Ksh.683 billion gold find benefits both the local community and the broader economy.
