The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a stern warning to the public and business community about a surge in fraudulent activities carried out by impostors posing as KEBS officials. In a notice released on Friday, KEBS disassociated itself from individuals affiliated with a private company falsely identifying as a consumer rights protection organisation.
According to KEBS, these individuals have been unlawfully conducting enforcement operations under the guise of implementing the Consumer Protection Act. Reports indicate that they are extorting bribes of up to Sh20,000 per shop during these illegal inspections and raids.
“Numerous complaints from the public and business community across the country reveal an organised and widespread pattern of fraudulent conduct,” KEBS stated.
One of the most alarming incidents was reported on June 16, 2025, in Longisa, Merigi, and Kembu business centres in Bomet County. Here, impostors reportedly carried out raids on retail shops and entertainment clubs, demanding bribes and intimidating business owners. Similar cases have emerged in Kakamega, Kisumu, Meru, Machakos, Voi, and Mombasa, suggesting that the impostors’ activities are systematic and well-coordinated.
KEBS emphasized that legitimate officers adhere to strict procedures when carrying out duties such as market surveillance. They are required to present both a Certificate of Appointment under the Standards Act, Chapter 496, and a KEBS Staff Identification Card. To verify their authenticity, members of the public can send the HR number on the staff ID via SMS to 20023.
“All KEBS enforcement activities are conducted in strict compliance with the Standards Act Cap 496 and the Fair Administrative Action Act No. 4 of 2015,” KEBS affirmed.
The agency urged business operators and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately. They advised anyone approached by individuals claiming to be KEBS officers to demand identification and verify it through the official SMS verification system.
KEBS has reiterated its commitment to upholding integrity and protecting the rights of both consumers and businesses against such fraudulent schemes.
