Kenya and China have reiterated their commitment to strengthening military cooperation as they marked the 98th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China in Nairobi. The event, hosted by the Chinese Embassy, drew senior military officers, diplomats, and government officials who underscored the importance of bilateral defense collaboration.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, delivering what she described as her final official address in the country, emphasized the PLA’s transformation into a modern, capable force. She attributed its growth to the enduring leadership of the Communist Party of China and the unwavering determination of the Chinese people.
“This is a victory of the unrelenting struggle of the Chinese people, and a victory of the heroic efforts of the People’s Army,” Guo said, highlighting the PLA’s evolution from a revolutionary force to a cornerstone of China’s global peace efforts.
Ambassador Guo reaffirmed China’s commitment to international peace and multilateral cooperation. She noted that since 1990, the PLA has participated in 25 UN peacekeeping missions, deploying over 50,000 personnel across more than 20 countries. Additionally, 47 Chinese naval escort fleets have patrolled the Gulf of Aden, ensuring maritime security for over 1,600 commercial vessels.
As the world prepares to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Guo stressed the importance of safeguarding global peace and respecting the authority of international institutions such as the United Nations.
On Kenya-China defense cooperation, she cited President William Ruto’s state visit to China in April, where both nations agreed to deepen collaboration in areas including counterterrorism, personnel training, and joint military exercises. These engagements aim to boost regional stability and enhance the capacity of Kenya’s security forces.
The celebration marked not only the PLA’s historic legacy but also a forward-looking agenda to enhance military ties between the two nations. Kenya and China continue to position themselves as strategic partners in fostering regional peace and security through strengthened defense collaboration.
