Kenya has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring Adequate Housing for All as a fundamental human right. Speaking on Thursday during the Second Session of the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Expert Working Group on Adequate Housing for All (OEWG-H2) held at the UN Complex in Gigiri, the Permanent Representative of Kenya to UN-Habitat, Ambassador Nakhumicha Wafula, emphasized the importance of inclusive financing to bridge the housing gap.
Amb. Wafula highlighted the need to promote multi-stakeholder financing models that integrate public, private, and philanthropic capital to drive sustainable housing development. She lauded the Co-Chair, France, for working closely with Kenya in advancing the Adequate Housing for All resolution, noting that both countries share a deep commitment to ensuring access to decent and affordable housing globally.
She further underscored that under the leadership of President William Ruto, Kenya has played a pioneering role in this global agenda. The country hosted a High-Level Breakfast during the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York and signed a Call to Action alongside other champion nations committed to advancing housing as a human right.
Amb. Wafula also reaffirmed Kenya’s resolve to sustain momentum as it prepares to hand over the Chairship to Azerbaijan and Somalia, ensuring continuity in efforts to achieve housing equity and sustainability.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Amb. Wafula hosted representatives from the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), where discussions centered on strengthening collaboration to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of county assemblies in promoting good governance and service delivery.
The forum emphasized the critical role of such partnerships in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) — which seeks to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Through continued collaboration and innovation, Kenya remains steadfast in championing housing as a cornerstone of human dignity and sustainable development.
