Kenya is poised to benefit from a Ksh130 billion (USD 1 billion) sports infrastructure initiative following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FIFA and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD). The concessional loans will be made available to FIFA Member Associations, including Kenya, to finance the construction and upgrade of FIFA-certified stadiums.
The programme prioritizes countries that demonstrate clear strategies to use sports as a driver of national development. Beyond stadium construction, the partnership aims to foster social inclusion, youth empowerment, and economic growth by providing modern spaces for training, competitions, and community engagement.
Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, CEO of the SFD, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, stating, “Sport is more than competition. It’s a catalyst for development and inclusion. Through concessional financing, we are helping countries build the infrastructure they need to unlock potential, empower young people, and strengthen communities for generations to come.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also endorsed the MoU, describing it as a key step toward global football development. “The memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Fund for Development will provide up to USD 1 billion in loans to finance the construction and enhancement of FIFA-certified stadiums. This is a crucial step in ensuring our Member Associations have the facilities to make football truly global,” Infantino said.
The modern stadiums and facilities are expected to create employment opportunities and stimulate local businesses in host communities. They will also provide safe and advanced environments for aspiring athletes to train and compete.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed expressed optimism about Kenya benefiting from the programme. “I appreciate the Saudi Fund for Development for stepping forward with support that will help developing Member Associations like FKF invest in modern, FIFA-certified infrastructure. This strengthens football ecosystems, creates opportunity for our youth, and lays the foundation for long-term growth,” he said.
This partnership comes shortly after Kenya successfully co-hosted the African Nations Championships in August 2025, highlighting the government’s commitment to sports development under President William Ruto’s administration. With this new support, Kenya is now positioned to attract further investment from development partners, private-sector players, and regional organizations.
