Kenya Power has awarded contracts worth Ksh.3.5 billion to businesses owned by youth, women, and people living with disabilities (PWDs) during the financial year ended 30th June 2025. The move aligns with the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) framework, which mandates that public entities set aside 30% of their annual procurement budget for special bidder categories.
This allocation represents a significant jump from the Ksh.614 million awarded in the 2023/24 financial year, signaling Kenya Power’s commitment to supporting inclusive growth and entrepreneurship among marginalized groups.
During the year, youth-owned enterprises received the largest share, securing Ksh.2.2 billion, followed by women-owned businesses with Ksh.1.25 billion, and PWD-owned businesses with Ksh.66.7 million.
Kenya Power’s General Manager for Supply Chain and Logistics, John Ngeno, emphasized the need to accelerate awareness and training for these groups. “We have noted that PWDs often lag behind the other groups, and we will use these forums to obtain feedback on the challenges they face so that we can tailor solutions,” he said.
The power utility also revealed that the 2024/25 performance is the highest in the last eight years, underlining a steady commitment to empowering youth, women, and PWDs. Kenya Power plans to continue collaborating with financial institutions to provide linkages for funding, further enabling these businesses to compete effectively for tenders.
This initiative not only boosts participation in government procurement but also strengthens Kenya Power’s role in fostering economic inclusion and entrepreneurial development among historically underrepresented groups.
By investing in training and financial support, Kenya Power is paving the way for sustainable business growth while promoting diversity and equity within the country’s public procurement ecosystem.
