Kenya Power has issued a public advisory urging electricity consumers to purchase tokens in advance ahead of a scheduled M-Pesa system upgrade on Monday, September 22, 2025. The downtime, announced by Safaricom PLC, will take place between 12:30 am and 3:30 am and will temporarily disrupt M-Pesa services, including Kenya Power’s Paybill numbers.
In a notice issued on Saturday, the utility firm said that Paybill 888880 for token purchases and Paybill 888888 for postpaid bill payments will be unavailable during the maintenance window.
“We encourage our customers to purchase their electricity tokens in advance before the scheduled maintenance to avoid any inconvenience,” the statement read.
Kenya Power added that customers attempting to top up their electricity accounts via M-Pesa during this period could experience delays in transaction processing.
Alternative Payment Options
Despite the disruption, Kenya Power assured consumers that they can still access its services through alternative channels. These include Airtel Money and mobile banking options offered by DTB Bank, NCBA Bank, Family Bank, Co-operative Bank, KCB, I&M Bank, National Bank of Kenya, and Equity Bank. Customers can use these services either through USSD codes or smartphone applications.
The firm also encouraged customers to stay informed through its official social media platforms, where further updates and support will be shared during the maintenance period.
Safaricom’s Upgrade
Safaricom explained that the three-hour upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability, security, and performance of the M-Pesa platform.
“For 18 years, M-Pesa has transformed lives across Kenya, connecting customers to opportunities every day. This upgrade will ensure we continue to deliver safe, secure, and worry-free services,” Safaricom said in its statement.
The telecommunications giant further noted that the timing of the upgrade was carefully chosen to minimize disruption and apologized in advance for any inconvenience caused.
