Kenya Power has issued a stern warning to the public and its customers regarding a growing scam involving fraudsters impersonating the company’s Managing Director and CEO, Eng. (Dr.) Joseph Siror. In a statement released on Friday, the utility firm said the conmen have been soliciting bribes and other illegal favors while pretending to represent the CEO.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, noting that it upholds a strict zero-tolerance policy on bribery, corruption, and any unethical conduct that undermines the trust of its customers and stakeholders.
“All payments for electricity services should be made through authorized channels, namely mobile money platforms, banks, and banking halls located in Kenya Power offices. Customers must always obtain official receipts for every transaction,” the statement read in part.
Kenya Power emphasized that no staff member, including the CEO, is authorized to demand or receive payment in person or through unofficial means. The company also cautioned customers against falling prey to individuals who may claim to offer expedited services, connections, or bill waivers in exchange for money.
To curb these incidents, the utility provider is urging Kenyans to be vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals or fraudulent activities to law enforcement or the nearest Kenya Power office. Customers have also been encouraged to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a Kenya Power employee by dialing *977# — a secure platform provided for customer support and service verification.
“We appeal to the public to work with us to protect our communities from these criminal elements who exploit unsuspecting citizens,” the company said.
Kenya Power’s statement comes amid a broader national push to clamp down on corruption and fraud across government agencies and public institutions. The utility firm reassured its customers of continued transparency in its operations and pledged to take legal action against anyone found impersonating its officials.
Members of the public are reminded that any Kenya Power service can be accessed through official and well-documented procedures, and no shortcuts or backdoor deals are acceptable.
