Kenya has emerged among the top African countries with the highest levels of internet connectivity and usage, according to the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). The ranking highlights the country’s rapid digital growth but also underscores the growing threat of cyberattacks targeting both public and private institutions.
Speaking during the annual Governors, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) Conference in Naivasha, ISACA Kenya Chapter President Bonface Asiligwa attributed the country’s strong performance to its tech-savvy and youthful population. He noted that digital transformation has significantly reshaped how individuals and organizations operate, driving innovation and economic growth.
However, Asiligwa cautioned that Kenya’s digital progress has come with increased cybersecurity challenges. He revealed that incidents of cybercrime, data breaches, and online bullying have surged alongside greater internet use.
To counter these threats, Asiligwa lauded the Kenya Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act, emphasizing that the law was not designed to stifle innovation but to create a structured framework for managing cyber risks. “Cyber risk is the biggest threat to any entity, including a country and our livelihoods. The act ensures Kenya is not left vulnerable to these dangers,” he said.
He further urged the government to develop strategic structures and programs that build the capacity of local cybersecurity professionals. “We need to upskill our workforce to manage technology-based risks and sustain our digital growth,” he added.
On artificial intelligence (AI), Asiligwa warned that while AI offers immense opportunities, it also raises questions about ethical use and institutional readiness. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to AI adoption that aligns with Kenya’s legal and regulatory frameworks, including the Data Protection Act.
Kenya’s digital expansion, while commendable, highlights the urgent need to strengthen cybersecurity preparedness and invest in skilled professionals to safeguard the nation’s digital future.
