Kenya is preparing to make its mark at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, scheduled from September 19 to 26. President William Ruto will lead the country’s delegation, aiming to advance key national and regional priorities.
Ahead of the summit, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei met with senior ministry officials. The goal was to sharpen Kenya’s strategy and ensure the country’s agenda is clear and impactful.
Key Priorities for Kenya
Kenya plans to champion issues that influence both national development and Africa’s future. Mudavadi highlighted key focus areas:
- Climate Action – Advocating for sustainable environmental policies.
- Peace and Stability – Promoting regional security and conflict resolution.
- Affordable Housing – Addressing the growing demand for homes.
- Global Financial Reform – Pushing for a fair and inclusive financial system.
- Inclusive Development – Ensuring that international decisions benefit ordinary citizens.
Sing’oei emphasized that the summit is about translating global discussions into tangible results for Kenyans.
Boosting Kenya’s Creative and Digital Economy
President Ruto will meet the Recording Academy, organisers of the Grammy Awards, to fast-track the creation of world-class recording studios in Nairobi. The studios will enable Nairobi to host the first African edition of the Grammys.
Ruto will also engage tech giants like Facebook, Google, and YouTube. Initiatives include integrating M-PESA payments into Facebook and allowing Google adverts to be purchased via M-PESA. These steps aim to empower Kenyan creators and small businesses to monetize content online effectively.
A Platform for Partnerships and Growth
Beyond speeches and resolutions, UNGA 80 provides Kenya an opportunity to deepen bilateral ties, attract investments, and forge partnerships that foster innovation and sustainable growth.
For Kenya, the 80th UNGA is more than diplomacy it is about ensuring that international decisions create real benefits for citizens and boost Africa’s role on the global stage.
