The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, together with the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC), has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Kenya’s global status as a premier travel destination. This was announced during a high-level consultative forum aimed at tackling sector challenges and steering growth toward an ambitious goal of attracting 5.5 million international visitors by 2027.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano underscored the significance of unity and sustained collaboration among all stakeholders. She emphasized the vital role of peace and stability in fostering tourism, calling for responsible national dialogue and storytelling to promote Kenya’s image globally.
“Tourism thrives where peace prevails,” Miano noted. “An isolated incident can be amplified globally and threaten confidence in our destination. I call upon our youth and all Kenyans to safeguard our reputation as a welcoming, united nation.”
The forum served as a timely response to recent disruptions that had raised concerns over their potential impact on tourism. Miano reassured stakeholders of the government’s unwavering commitment to national stability, which she identified as key to a thriving tourism industry.
KAHC Chief Executive Officer Mike Macharia lauded the sector’s resilience, attributing continued recovery to both the adaptability of hospitality businesses and Kenya’s vibrant workforce. He praised the government’s ongoing support and stressed the importance of maintaining open dialogue.
“While there are specific challenges we still face as a sector, I am confident that through joint action, we can overcome them,” Macharia stated, noting that Kenya’s hospitality services have remained accessible, safe, and responsive to both local and international tourists.
A key outcome of the forum was the issuance of a joint communiqué anchored on eleven pillars aimed at strengthening the sector. These include peace-building, youth engagement, increased air connectivity, strategic storytelling, affordable tourism investment financing, and demystifying tourism for local communities.
As Kenya eyes substantial growth in visitor numbers, the united stance taken by the government and hoteliers marks a significant step toward ensuring the country’s continued appeal as a safe, dynamic, and world-class tourism destination.
