The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has completed the restoration of the Loiyangalani–Suswa high-voltage transmission line, a critical link for delivering clean power from the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) plant to the national grid.
The restoration project, valued at Ksh46.13 million and USD 1.59 million (about Ksh207 million), was initiated to address the collapse of six transmission towers near Longonot. The failure had disrupted the stable flow of electricity from the LTWP plant, forcing reliance on a temporary bypass that proved unreliable.
Restoration works involved replacing the collapsed towers, conductor stringing, and installing Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), which improves both transmission efficiency and grid reliability. To ensure timely completion, KETRACO engaged a private contractor under an agreement signed in November 2024.
The project was executed in two phases. The first circuit was successfully energised on September 20, partially restoring functionality to the grid. The second and final circuit is scheduled for energisation on September 28, which will return the line to full operational capacity.
Once fully restored, the transmission line will facilitate the evacuation of up to 300 MW of wind power from the LTWP plant. This is expected to significantly enhance Kenya’s renewable energy supply, lower electricity costs, and strengthen overall grid reliability.
Speaking during the commissioning, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi highlighted the importance of the project in advancing Kenya’s clean energy agenda. “The restored transmission capacity will provide affordable and reliable electricity, especially for households and businesses in the northern region,” he said.
The Loiyangalani–Suswa line remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s renewable energy infrastructure, playing a vital role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels while unlocking the full potential of Africa’s largest wind farm. With the completion of this project, KETRACO aims to ensure uninterrupted, sustainable power delivery for years to come.
