The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has started using drone patrols in Karura Forest to boost security. The new system is aimed at making visitors feel safer as they walk, jog, cycle, and picnic in the popular urban forest.
According to KFS, the drones will conduct regular aerial patrols. They will work alongside forest rangers on the ground. The service noted that this step shows its commitment to keeping Karura Forest safe and open to the public.
“This new security system provides better monitoring of the forest area, giving visitors confidence as they walk, cycle, and picnic,” KFS said in a statement.
Response to Recent Safety Concerns
The announcement comes after growing concerns about safety in Karura. Just over a week ago, reports of a python sighting caused worry among forest users.
KFS confirmed receiving reports of the snake on September 5. The service advised visitors to report any future sightings immediately. It also reminded people to keep their pets on a leash and to stay on marked paths.
The agency, however, noted that the photo circulating online of the python had not been verified. Similar reports were also recorded in 2019 and 2022.
Guidelines for Visitors
To improve safety, KFS has asked visitors to:
- Stick to designated tracks and walking paths.
- Keep pets on a leash at all times.
- Report wildlife sightings to rangers posted at forest gates.
A Safer Urban Green Space
KFS has also promised to work with other government agencies to find long-term safety solutions. Despite the recent concerns, the service continues to encourage Kenyans and tourists to enjoy Karura’s green spaces.
With the introduction of drone patrols, KFS hopes to strike a balance between conservation, recreation, and visitor safety.
