Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting women and small-scale traders through the construction of 400 modern markets across the country, as part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Speaking at his Irunduni home in Tharaka Nithi on Monday, where he hosted over 5,000 women from Meru County, Kindiki emphasised the critical role women play in driving economic growth. He assured “Mama Mboga” and other micro-entrepreneurs of the government’s unwavering support through infrastructure development and grant provision.
“We will not underestimate the power of women in transforming the country’s fortunes,” Kindiki said. “Women-led nano, micro, and small-scale enterprises are the foundation of a strong, inclusive, and prosperous economy.”
Meru County is among the key beneficiaries of this initiative, with 21 modern markets under construction, including the Sh800 million Gakoromone market in Meru town. Other markets are being established in Kianjai, Nkubu, and Maua towns, aiming to provide dignified workspaces for traders.
Kindiki urged women to form and register groups to access government empowerment programs targeting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). He noted that group-based enterprises are essential for consolidating national economic development.
He also encouraged women to register for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHA) to protect themselves against the burden of medical expenses. “We want every Kenyan to have medical cover, whether they have income or not. For those unable to contribute, the government will support them,” he said.
The DP highlighted other development projects in Meru County, including the elevation of Meru Level 5 Hospital to Level 6, revival of stalled roadworks, expansion of last-mile electricity connectivity, and the Sh1 billion reconstruction of the vital Nithi bridge.
“As I push for national development, I have not forgotten Meru. I will not let you down,” he assured, promising to fulfill government pledges and seek continued support from the region in future elections.
