Kisumu County has issued a stern notice to landowners defaulting on land rates, warning of severe enforcement actions including penalties, interest, and auctioning of properties. According to a notice released on Tuesday, the county government is owed over Sh30 billion by 154 institutions and 1,738 individuals.
The announcement, made by Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga, highlights the county’s urgent need to recover the huge outstanding amounts to fund public services and development projects. Wanga emphasized that defaulters must settle their arrears or face consequences as stipulated under the law.
“The owners of the listed properties are advised to ensure that they pay outstanding land rates arrears owed to the County Government of Kisumu otherwise the properties shall be subject to penalties, interest and enforcement actions including but not limited to auction,” the notice read.
The county has provided payment instructions, directing landowners to make their payments through the City of Kisumu Revenue Collection account at the Cooperative Bank of Kenya, Kisumu Main Branch. The account name is City of Kisumu Revenue Collection, account number 01101496329001. Alternatively, mobile payments can be made via Paybill number 400222, with the account number as 84933#BLLNo.
For those who have already cleared their balances but still appear on the list, the county advises a visit to the City of Kisumu office for reconciliation. A detailed list of the defaulters is available on the county’s official website: city.kisumu.go.ke.
Additionally, all listed landowners are required to attend a crucial Governor’s Roundtable on Land, scheduled for Friday, April 25, 2025, at 9 am. The meeting will take place at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu. Stakeholders are urged to register for the event promptly.
This move marks a decisive step by Kisumu County towards improving revenue collection and enforcing compliance, signaling that defaulters can no longer evade their obligations without repercussions.
