The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has unveiled a new Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS), designed to make it easier for landlords to file and pay rental income taxes. The announcement was made on Thursday, September 25, by Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga, who confirmed that property owners can now access the system through both the eRITS portal and the eCitizen public portal.
According to KRA, the system has been engineered to streamline the management of properties, filing, and payment of Monthly Rental Income (MRI). Landlords are urged to update or correct their property details within the platform to avoid any future inconveniences.
“KRA wishes to notify the public that it has rolled out an Electronic Rental Income Tax System (eRITS), which will facilitate easier payment of monthly Rental Income. The system enables management of properties, filing, and payment of rental taxes simply and conveniently,” Wattanga stated.
The authority has also encouraged landlords experiencing difficulties with the new system to reach out through official KRA channels, including email, phone, social media platforms, or by visiting the nearest KRA office.
This move comes shortly after KRA revealed plans to deploy over 10,000 agents across the country to help streamline tax services. The agents will support Kenyans with taxpayer registration, filing of returns, and making payments. This initiative will supplement the current 136 physical service points across Kenya, serving an estimated 22 million taxpayers, with a focus on urban centers.
Acting Commissioner for Micro and Small Taxpayers, George Obell, said the recruitment drive would also create economic opportunities. “We plan to recruit the first 10,000 agents this year. These agents will provide basic services such as registration, tax filing, and payments. This is also an opportunity for Kenyans to earn commissions while helping fellow citizens meet their tax obligations,” he noted.
With the introduction of eRITS and the upcoming rollout of service agents, KRA aims to make tax compliance more convenient, efficient, and accessible to property owners and taxpayers across the country.
