The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued a statement addressing public concern over the health of a frail lion seen struggling to walk in a viral video filmed at a popular garden.
In the clarification released on Friday, KWS assured the public that the lion, known as Lamu, is not neglected but is receiving specialized veterinary care. The service explained that the animal’s condition is due to advanced age and not malnutrition or mistreatment, as some had speculated online.
“Lamu, a 22-year-old lion, has lived far beyond the typical lifespan of lions in the wild, usually between 12 and 16 years,” KWS stated. “His remarkable longevity is attributed to consistent monitoring and dedicated veterinary care.”
KWS Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga noted that Lamu was rescued and transferred from an orphanage in 2012. The authority revealed that he has been under treatment since 2020 for progressive spinal nerve degeneration, a condition that affects mobility and coordination.
“The team examined Lamu this afternoon and confirmed that he continues to receive treatment for spinal nerve degeneration,” the statement added.
According to KWS, the condition is age-related and comparable to mobility challenges in elderly humans. To maintain his muscle strength and coordination, Lamu undergoes regular physiotherapy and takes gentle walks as part of his recovery plan.
Veterinarians have also confirmed that all other animals at the facility are in good health.
KWS reaffirmed its commitment to animal welfare, emphasizing that every effort is being made to ensure Lamu’s comfort and dignity in his twilight years.
“KWS, together with its partners, remains committed to upholding the highest standards of animal welfare in its mission to conserve and protect Kenya’s wildlife,” the statement concluded.
