Residents of Makongeni have been given five days to vacate the estate as the government prepares to demolish old structures for a new affordable housing project. Families who have received compensation have already started relocating, ahead of the December 2 eviction deadline.
For many long-time residents, some who have lived in Makongeni for over six decades, leaving their homes is an emotional and difficult decision. “Serikali imeamua na sisi hatuna nguvu tutahama tu,” said Elizabeth Musyoka, reflecting the sense of inevitability among residents. Others voiced concerns about the disruption of daily life.
The government has assured residents that they will have the first opportunity to purchase units in the redeveloped estate, promising a modern Makongeni that will welcome the community back. To facilitate relocation, over 3,000 households have been paid Ksh.150,000 each. While some residents acknowledge the support, many feel the amount is insufficient for resettlement.
“Nimekaa hapa tangu 2005… walisema ukipata hiyo 150 uanze kuhama,” said Marion Takaa. Parents are particularly concerned about securing new schools for their children. “Hatujapata ata barua kutoka shule… siku tumepewa kidogo ata haiwezi nitosha nifike Kisii,” said Sabina Kemuma.
However, not all households have received compensation. Government officials note that about 100 families are yet to be paid due to verification challenges, including mismatched identification details. The authorities insist these residents will be compensated once the issues are resolved.
Despite the challenges, the government emphasizes that clearing the land is essential to pave the way for a modern, upgraded estate. While the eviction marks the end of an era for Makongeni residents, officials maintain that the redevelopment aims to offer improved housing and the opportunity for the community to return.
The next five days will be critical as residents make difficult decisions, pack their belongings, and prepare to leave homes that for many have been the center of their lives for decades.
