A damning independent inquiry into the BBC’s MasterChef has upheld 45 allegations against long-time presenter Gregg Wallace, revealing a troubling pattern of inappropriate conduct spanning nearly two decades.
Commissioned by production company Banijay following a BBC News investigation, the report examined 83 allegations in total against Wallace. It confirmed that most substantiated claims involved inappropriate sexual language and humour, while others related to culturally insensitive or racist remarks. Among the findings were one case of unwelcome physical contact and three involving Wallace being in a state of undress.
The report, released Monday, covers alleged incidents between 2005 and 2024. It also acknowledged 10 complaints made against others involved in the production, with two concerning swearing and racist language upheld.
Wallace, who was recently diagnosed with autism during the inquiry, has stated that while his neurodiversity may offer context for some behaviours, he does not wish to “hide behind it.” However, he faced criticism last week from autism charities for suggesting his diagnosis was linked to the misconduct claims.
The BBC has since confirmed it will not work with Wallace going forward and admitted that earlier intervention opportunities were missed. In a statement, the broadcaster said, “More could and should have been done sooner.” Six complaints had been raised with the BBC, and another six with Banijay, during the period in question.
Patrick Holland, CEO of Banijay UK, acknowledged failures in escalation procedures and extended an apology to those affected, stating: “We are extremely sorry to anyone who has been impacted by this behaviour.”
Philippa Childs, head of creative industries union Bectu, called the findings “a real failure” and criticised the industry’s culture of power imbalance. “Misogyny, intimidation, ageism and sexual harassment should have no place in modern workplaces,” she said.
The future of MasterChef remains uncertain, with last year’s series, featuring Wallace, yet to be aired.
Meanwhile, Wallace has reportedly been sacked, as an additional 50 individuals have come forward with fresh claims, including from other TV shows, nightclubs, and industry events.
