Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has commended the steady progress of the electronic Government Procurement (eGP) system rollout across Kenya, describing it as a transformative step toward transparent and efficient public spending.
Mbadi revealed that 15 County Assemblies and 12 County Executives have already been fully integrated into the eGP platform, with the remaining counties in the final stages of onboarding. “The progress so far is impressive,” Mbadi stated, noting that the system is gaining strong traction nationwide.
The eGP system is a key component of the government’s digital transformation agenda, designed to automate the entire procurement process—from tendering and evaluation to contract management and payment. According to Mbadi, this initiative will seal long-standing loopholes that have enabled corruption and wastage in public procurement.
A major milestone in the rollout is the integration of the eGP platform with the Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) iTax system. Mbadi explained that this linkage will enhance tax compliance and curb evasion by ensuring that all procurement transactions are traceable and verifiable. He projected that the move could help the government save up to KSh 200 billion annually through reduced leakages and improved revenue collection.
President William Ruto also lauded the initiative, calling it a “game-changer” in fighting corruption and promoting fairness. “It will eliminate misuse of funds, favoritism, and overpricing in government tenders,” Ruto emphasized, citing that over 40 percent of public funds are lost through corrupt procurement practices.
Initially, some county governors had opposed the rollout, arguing that the system was rushed and unprepared. However, Mbadi affirmed that the Treasury is working closely with the Council of Governors and the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) to ensure a smooth and inclusive implementation process across all 47 counties.
To support the rollout, the Treasury has provided training, established a call center, and deployed 100 Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) to assist procuring entities nationwide.
With its nationwide adoption now underway, the eGP system is set to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in Kenya’s public procurement landscape.
