A businesswoman in Migori County is seeking compensation after losing her property during a chaotic public meeting.
Tents and Chairs Burnt in Fracas
Esther Akinyi says her three tents and 300 plastic chairs were destroyed during a fracas at Macalder gold mines on September 14, 2024. The items had been hired by the county government of Migori for the gold miners’ meeting.
According to Akinyi, the loss robbed her of her main source of income. She explains that she bought the tents and chairs through a loan, which she is now unable to service.
One Year Without Payment
It has been one year since the incident, yet Akinyi says she has not received any compensation. She has visited several county offices seeking payment, but her efforts have been unsuccessful.
“I have knocked on many doors in Migori County offices. Sadly, my compensation has not been processed. This has affected me greatly, including my ability to pay school fees for my children,” she said.
The financial burden has weighed heavily on her family. With her business at a standstill, she struggles to meet daily needs and clear outstanding debts.
County Government Responds
Migori County Chief Officer for Finance, John Odoyo Achuora, has urged Akinyi to remain patient. He confirmed that the county government is aware of the matter and has been in contact with her.
“We have spoken with her before and assured her that she will be paid. The county will settle the payment in due course,” Achuora said.
Struggles of Small Business Owners
Akinyi’s case reflects the challenges faced by small business owners who rely on county contracts. Delayed payments or losses often push them into debt and financial hardship.
For now, she continues to wait, hoping that the county will honor its commitment and help her rebuild her livelihood.
