The government will begin a Sh41 billion expansion of the Port of Mombasa in December, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced. Speaking during the Nyali Constituency Economic Empowerment event on Sunday, Kindiki said the project will significantly enhance the port’s capacity to manage the surging cargo traffic recorded in recent years.
“The President ensured port operations were restored immediately after assuming office. Now, it is time to expand the facility. The President will be here to launch the project,” said Kindiki.
According to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), container traffic at the port has increased from 1.4 million to 2 million containers over the past three years. The planned expansion aims to improve efficiency, reduce congestion, and strengthen the port’s role as a critical trade gateway for Kenya and the wider region.
The expansion is part of the government’s broader development strategy for the Coast region, which includes major infrastructure projects such as the dualling of the Nyali Bridge–Mtwapa–Kilifi highway, expansion of the Changamwe–Jomvu–Mazeras–Mariakani road, and completion of the Dongo Kundu Bypass. These initiatives are expected to ease transport, boost trade, and stimulate economic growth.
Kindiki emphasized that President William Ruto’s administration is committed to delivering tangible development in the Coast region, unlike past governments. “Past administrations made promises to the people of the Coast but failed to deliver. President Ruto’s government is different it is implementing what others only talked about,” he said.
Mombasa is also set to benefit from other key projects, including the Sh6 billion Nyali Phase 1 Affordable Housing Project and ongoing investments in the blue economy, such as the Sh1.5 billion Tuna Fish Hub and Liwatoni Fish Port.
Additionally, the government has allocated Sh2 billion to address the squatter problem and support land ownership solutions for residents across the region.
