Nairobi County Government has intensified its war on illegal waste disposal after 10 traders were arrested along Jogoo Road for unlawful dumping. The crackdown, led by Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria, took place on September 30 and targeted business owners notorious for flouting waste management laws.
According to Mosiria, some traders have developed a habit of disposing of garbage on the roadside instead of paying for proper collection and disposal services. “Jogoo Road traders have become notorious for unlawful waste disposal, often choosing not to pay for garbage collection and proper disposal services,” he said.
Among those apprehended was a well-known street dweller who traders allegedly use to dispose of their waste in exchange for food or small amounts of money. “We apprehended 10 individuals directly involved in unlawful dumping, including one notorious street man,” Mosiria added.
Despite repeated warnings from the county, many business owners, including hotel operators, continue to ignore regulations. The county has now opted for strict enforcement to protect public health and restore Nairobi’s dignity as a clean city.
Mosiria emphasized that the operation was not punitive but aimed at safeguarding the environment. “Enforcement is not meant to punish but to protect the health, dignity, and cleanliness of our city. We shall sustain this exercise until full compliance is achieved,” he noted.
To underline his commitment, Mosiria revealed he would personally oversee enforcement along Jogoo Road for the next week to ensure the issue is fully addressed. He also warned traders across the city that the crackdown will continue and those found violating the law will face arrest and prosecution.
The Nairobi County Government has in recent months faced challenges in waste management, with illegal dumping contributing to clogged drainage systems and unsanitary conditions in several estates. The latest operation signals a renewed effort to enforce compliance and improve waste management across the city.
