Members of Parliament have resolved to summon officials from the Ministries of Defence and Sports, alongside the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to explain the alleged misappropriation of billions of shillings at Sports Kenya. The decision was made by the Public Investments Committee on Social Services, Administration and Agriculture (PIC-SSAA) during a heated session on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
The session, chaired by Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, grilled Sports Kenya CEO Gabriel Komora over what lawmakers termed as deliberate financial mismanagement. MPs cited massive cost escalations, missing financial records, and unrefunded public funds linked to various stadium projects and sporting events.
At the centre of the probe is Kinoru Stadium, whose cost ballooned from Ksh109 million to Ksh355 million, leaving Ksh246 million unaccounted for. Lawmakers also flagged irregularities in regional stadiums, where seven county projects initially budgeted at Ksh2.8 billion mysteriously appeared as eight, costing Ksh2.9 billion, despite ongoing EACC investigations.
Komora claimed original documents were surrendered to the EACC and never returned, forcing reliance on certified copies—a claim MPs dismissed, insisting that the original records must be produced. “Taxpayers’ money cannot just disappear without accountability,” said Amisi.
The committee further raised concerns over Ksh30 million paid to consultants to develop Public-Private Partnership models for stadiums that were never implemented.
Another issue involved the World U18 Athletics Championships, where Sports Kenya allegedly spent Ksh382 million, but only Ksh274.8 million was refunded by the Sports Ministry, leaving Ksh47.39 million unaccounted for. Additionally, Ksh73 million in interest certificates and Ksh48 million remitted to Athletics Kenya lacked supporting documentation.
MPs have vowed that findings from the ongoing probe could lead to legal action against individuals found culpable, marking yet another test for Kenya’s commitment to transparency in sports management.
