Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has arrived in New York to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He landed on Thursday evening, just ahead of President William Ruto, who will lead Kenya’s delegation.
Theme of the Assembly
The 80th UNGA is being held under the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.” The gathering brings together Heads of State, Foreign Ministers, and global leaders to debate major issues, including peace, security, sustainable development, and climate action.
Kenya’s Agenda
Mudavadi will join President Ruto in advancing Kenya’s foreign policy priorities. The country’s agenda focuses on three key areas:
- Promoting peace and security in Africa and beyond
- Strengthening economic diplomacy to attract trade and investment
- Championing sustainable development and climate resilience
Speaking before the summit, Mudavadi stressed Kenya’s role in ensuring that African voices are heard on climate change.
“Our mission is to ensure that the voices of African countries and vulnerable communities are effectively represented in the global response to climate change,” he noted.
High-Level Meetings
While in New York, Mudavadi will hold bilateral talks with international leaders, foreign ministers, and development partners. These meetings aim to strengthen Kenya’s partnerships and reinforce its reputation as a reliable multilateral actor.
He will also highlight Nairobi’s unique role as the host of the United Nations headquarters in Africa. Additionally, he is expected to lobby for Kenya’s candidatures within various UN agencies.
Commitment to Multilateralism
Kenya’s participation in this year’s UNGA reaffirms its global leadership. The government has underlined that diplomacy is not only about advancing national interests but also about shaping global solutions.
By focusing on peace, prosperity, and sustainable development, Kenya seeks to strengthen the collective African voice on the world stage.
