Kenya has officially welcomed the elevation of its diplomatic relationship with China to a new level marking the dawn of an “All-Weather Kenya-China Community with a Shared Future for the New Era.” Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, hailed the development as a strategic milestone that signals deepening cooperation and mutual prosperity between the two nations.
Speaking during a high-level meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the ongoing Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Changsha, China, Mudavadi underscored Kenya’s unwavering commitment to the One-China Policy. He emphasized that the strengthened partnership is anchored in trust, shared values, and a joint pursuit of sustainable development.
“This upgraded relationship is a testament to our mutual commitment to cooperation, respect, and the pursuit of win-win outcomes that can serve as a model for other African nations,” said Mudavadi. He praised China’s long-standing role as a reliable partner in trade, infrastructure development, and financial cooperation.
The enhanced diplomatic ties are expected to usher in a new era of collaboration in key sectors including energy, agriculture, health, and digital technology. With China already heavily invested in Kenya through infrastructure projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway and numerous road networks, Mudavadi emphasized the need to deepen financial cooperation further.
He urged that pending financial cooperation agreements be finalized before June 2025 to unlock critical funding for socio-economic development programmes in Kenya. These include initiatives in housing, water and sanitation, industrialization, and youth empowerment.
Mudavadi also reiterated Kenya’s desire to leverage China’s experience in innovation and industrial growth, highlighting the importance of technology transfer and capacity building.
The meeting was part of a broader effort to position Kenya as a central player in Africa-China relations, particularly at a time when global geopolitics is shifting and partnerships built on mutual respect and shared goals are becoming increasingly essential.
Kenya’s affirmation of the One-China Policy and its upgraded status with China is expected to solidify long-term diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges between the two nations, paving the way for sustainable and inclusive growth.
