A Murang’a-based businesswoman is reeling from massive losses after her chain of supermarkets was looted and vandalised during the recent Saba Saba protests. Anabel Wanjiku, proprietor of County Supermarket, says she lost goods and property worth more than Sh200 million after demonstrators targeted her businesses across Murang’a and Kirinyaga counties.
While her main outlet in Kenol town withstood a direct break-in, her other branches in Kabati, Murang’a town, Kagio, and Kagumo were not spared. Vandals destroyed property and made away with goods in broad daylight, leaving her and over 300 employees facing an uncertain future.
“I am devastated. I have lost goods and property worth more than Sh200 million,” Wanjiku said. “This is not just about me; more than 300 employees who depended on these businesses are now staring at joblessness.”
Wanjiku, who has been a pillar in the community, disclosed that her businesses have for years supported more than 100 needy students, some studying abroad. She also supplied bread regularly to a local special needs school — initiatives that are now in jeopardy.
“For over a decade, I’ve ensured children in one of our local schools do not miss bread. Now, even that is at stake,” she said tearfully. “While I wait for the insurance company to process my claim, I’m left wondering how I will meet all these responsibilities.”
The attack drew widespread condemnation from local residents and businesspeople, who urged the government to safeguard lives and livelihoods. “The police must protect our businesses. We have families to feed and responsibilities to meet,” said Moses Murigi, a businessman in Kenol.
Murang’a South Subcounty Police Commander Charity Karimi confirmed that investigations are ongoing and several suspects have already been arrested. “We will not allow criminal elements to hijack peaceful protests to loot and destroy property,” she said, adding that security operations had been intensified to restore calm.
Residents are now calling on the government to offer compensation to affected businesses and take firm action against those behind the violence.
