The Council of Governors (CoG) has appointed Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki as its new Vice Chair, replacing Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga who stepped down following widespread backlash over insensitive remarks he made regarding the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Kahiga resigned from the leadership position on October 22, just weeks after a major reshuffle within the council on October 6. During the reshuffle, Kahiga had retained his role as Vice Chair and Chair Ahmed Abdullahi of Wajir kept his position as well. However, the emergence of a controversial video in which Kahiga was heard speaking in Kikuyu and appearing to celebrate Raila’s passing sparked national outrage, ultimately forcing his resignation.
Njuki, who has steadily risen within the council’s leadership structure, had been serving as CoG Chief Whip since October 6, a role just below the Vice Chair. Prior to that, he chaired the influential CoG Health Committee, where he played a key role in addressing nationwide health sector matters. His appointment signals a continuation of leadership stability within the council amid recent tensions.
Following Njuki’s elevation, Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has taken over as the new CoG Chief Whip, according to sources who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke. Cheboi replaces Njuki, who had himself replaced Nandi Governor Stephen Sang earlier in the month. Sang, who served as Chief Whip for three years, was reassigned to chair the Resource Mobilisation and Partnerships Committee.
Kahiga’s exit marks one of the most dramatic leadership changes within the CoG in recent years, coming at a time when political sensitivities remain high across the country. His remarks which suggested that Raila’s passing would shift government priorities and redirect national resources from Nyanza back to the Mount Kenya region were condemned as reckless and divisive.
Njuki’s appointment is expected to restore stability within the council as the CoG continues its mandate of championing devolution and strengthening county governance.
