Nairobi County is cracking down on littering in the Central Business District (CBD). The county has warned that anyone caught dumping waste in undesignated areas will be arrested and charged.
Zero Tolerance on Littering
County Environment Director Geoffrey Mosiria said the new measures will apply to everyone. From people tossing candy wrappers and soda bottles to businesses disposing of garbage carelessly, no one will be spared.
“We are going to be making some popular decisions, including apprehending those who are not willing to comply until we achieve compliance,” Mosiria said.
Business Owners Urged to Comply
Mosiria cautioned business owners against using street families to dispose of garbage. He explained that this often leads to waste being dumped in the wrong places.
“Please make sure that you use a registered person to dump your waste in the designated areas,” he advised.
He also urged hawkers to clean up after closing business and either use litter bins or transfer points.
Green Army Leads the Cleanup
On Sunday night, over 3,000 members of the Green Army carried out a major cleanup in the CBD. They worked across the city to collect garbage and tidy the streets.
Governor Johnson Sakaja joined the exercise and praised their dedication.
“Many discouraged me from confirming these workers to permanent and pensionable terms, arguing that they would become lazy. But the Green Army has proved otherwise,” Sakaja said.
Long-Term Waste Solution
The cleanup also laid the foundation for the upcoming Green Nairobi Company Limited. The county-owned company will modernize waste collection and disposal.
Officials say the company will provide a lasting solution to Nairobi’s garbage problem, ensuring the city remains clean and accessible.
