The Nairobi Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass at the busy Haile Selassie–Uhuru Highway roundabout is almost ready for use, with construction progress standing at 97 per cent. The Ksh.2 billion project, funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund, is being implemented by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of Civil One Consulting Engineers Ltd.
On Thursday, the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure toured the site and commended the development, describing it as a major boost to pedestrian safety and traffic efficiency in Nairobi.
The 500-metre underground walkway is designed to ease movement for thousands of pedestrians who cross between Mombasa Road, Upper Hill, Westlands, and the Railway terminus. Once complete, it will significantly reduce congestion at one of the city’s busiest junctions, which is used by more than 21,000 people daily.
The underpass comes with modern facilities, including:
- Seven standby generators and a water pump to handle drainage.
- CCTV surveillance and a police post to boost security.
- Elevators for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and expectant mothers.
- 39 commercial spaces, including shops and billboards, designed to generate revenue.
According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the final works include installation of elevators, electrical and mechanical systems, interior finishing, landscaping, and CCTV setup.
Once operational, the Greenpark underpass will not only make Nairobi safer for pedestrians but also reduce traffic conflicts between vehicles and non-motorised users. It is expected to shorten travel times, enhance mobility, and create new business opportunities through its retail spaces.
With its modern infrastructure, the Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass marks a key step in transforming Nairobi into a safer and more efficient urban hub.
