Authorities in Nairobi have dismantled an illegal electricity hub near the National Archives in the Central Business District (CBD).
The rogue station was allegedly tapping into Kenya Power lines. It was selling electricity to nearby shops without permission. Authorities say it also tampered with street lights and CCTV systems. This disruption is linked to rising crime in parts of the city centre.
Suspects Arrested, Main Perpetrator Sought
Several suspects were arrested over the weekend. However, a manhunt is ongoing for the main suspect behind the illegal operation.
Governor Sakaja Launches Recovery Plan
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has launched a joint plan with the National Police Service and Kenya Power. The aim is to restore security and power in the CBD.
The plan includes:
- Securing power feed points.
- Replacing street lamps quickly.
- Deploying armed escorts for utility crews working in high-risk areas.
“Large sections of the CBD, including Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, the Tom Mboya Monument, and Mama Ngina/Moi Avenue junction, have faced repeated blackouts and rising crime due to vandalism and illegal connections,” said Sakaja.
Currently, only one of three power phases is working at key intersections. Authorities warn that a total blackout could happen if interventions are delayed.
Preventive Measures and Community Support
The County is also focusing on preventive measures:
- Installing alternative power supplies.
- Running public awareness campaigns.
- Partnering with businesses to improve surveillance and reporting.
Governor Sakaja urged the business community to cooperate by installing CCTV cameras and sharing intelligence.
He also appealed to the national government for additional support to fund urban restoration projects. Authorities warn that without urgent action, the city’s power and security systems could worsen.
Looking Ahead
The dismantling of this illegal hub is a major step in protecting Nairobi’s infrastructure. Continued cooperation from the public and private sectors will be key to preventing future illegal electricity networks and ensuring the CBD remains safe and powered.
