The government’s push to address Kenya’s urban housing deficit under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) is gaining traction, with the Nanyuki Affordable Housing Project now 95 per cent complete. Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo made the announcement, highlighting the project’s progress and its anticipated impact on local communities.
Launched in January 2024 by President William Ruto, the Nanyuki project is situated in Laikipia East Constituency, Laikipia County. The development comprises 200 housing units, including 60 studio apartments, 20 one-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom units, and 20 three-bedroom units. This mix is intended to cater to the varied needs of residents, from single individuals to larger families.
According to PS Omollo, the remaining tasks involve civil works and landscaping, which are moving steadily toward completion. “This project addresses the critical housing shortage in the region and delivers broad socio-economic benefits,” he said.
Beyond housing, the initiative has become a catalyst for economic empowerment and local development. It has opened up supply chain opportunities for local businesses supplying building materials and other services. The project has also been a significant job creator, employing local artisans, technicians, and laborers, thereby injecting income directly into the community.
Importantly, youth and women have benefited from hands-on training and employment, gaining valuable construction and project support skills that will serve them well beyond this project.
The Nanyuki housing scheme is part of a broader national effort, with similar projects underway across Kenya. On May 27, 2025, PS Omollo also announced that the affordable housing project in Eldoret had reached 82 per cent completion. The Eldoret site, consisting of 220 units 60 studio apartments, 40 one-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom units, and 20 three-bedroom units is progressing with 220 workers on-site handling civil works and final touches across nine residential blocks.
These developments mark a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to expanding access to decent and affordable housing while driving inclusive economic growth at the grassroots level.
