Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Njeri Maina has been honoured with the Champion For Justice Award in the United States for her remarkable efforts in defending the rights and freedoms of Kenyan youth. The award, presented by Governor Matt Meyers on behalf of the Delaware Community, recognises individuals or entities that demonstrate extraordinary commitment to fairness, equality, and legal advocacy for the marginalised and vulnerable in society.
Speaking on Tuesday morning after receiving the award, Njeri expressed her gratitude, saying she was “truly and deeply humbled” by the recognition. In a post shared on her social media platforms, she dedicated the award to her legal team and the supporters of the 50 million-plus cash-bail campaign, a nationwide initiative aimed at raising funds to bail out young Kenyans arrested during the June and July protests.
“Truly deeply humbled to be presented with the Champion For Justice Award by Governor Matt Meyers, on behalf of the Delaware Community. An award to celebrate the work of defending Gen Z in the courtrooms,” she wrote.
Njeri also thanked the social media influencers who amplified the grievances of Gen Zs, noting that their voices helped push for accountability and justice.
In recent months, the outspoken lawmaker has been a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, particularly over its handling of the anti-government protests. She accused the government of unjustly labelling young demonstrators as terrorists — a move she described as a grave human rights violation.
Through her continued advocacy and legal interventions, Njeri Maina has positioned herself as one of the leading defenders of Kenya’s young generation, using both the courtroom and public platforms to push for justice and civic freedom.
Justice be our shield and defender, she concluded in her post echoing Kenya’s national anthem and reaffirming her commitment to justice for all.
