The government has begun the process of compensating landowners in Migori County to pave the way for the construction of the Muhuru Pier in Muhuru Bay.
According to a gazette notice dated August 26, the National Land Commission (NLC) announced that 26 parcels of land, totaling 6.8 hectares in the Kadem/Muhuru Bay area, will be acquired on behalf of the Migori County Government, which is spearheading the project.
The Commission has directed all affected landowners, whose names were published in the notice, to visit the Migori County Lands Office for hearings on compensation claims. Individuals have been asked to submit written claims, copies of their national identity cards, KRA PINs, land ownership documents, and bank account details to facilitate the compensation process.
“In pursuance of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII, the National Land Commission, on behalf of the County Government of Migori, gives notice of a hearing of claims to compensation for interested parties in the land required for the construction of Muhuru Pier,” the gazette notice stated.
The hearings will be held both at the NLC offices in Ardhi House, Nairobi, and at its Migori County office.
A pier is a raised structure extending into a water body, typically used for docking boats and ships. The planned Muhuru Pier is expected to boost fishing activities and water transport in the region, which borders Lake Victoria.
The announcement comes just two weeks after the NLC issued a similar notice regarding land acquisition in Kiambu County for the Ndekere–Kwa Macharia–Cuniniki Road project. In the August 8 notice, the Commission revealed that parcels of land in Ndurugu/Gacharage, measuring a combined 0.217 hectares, would be acquired for the county road development.
Both projects are part of ongoing efforts by the government and county administrations to expand infrastructure, ease transport, and stimulate economic growth at the local level.
The NLC has urged all affected parties in both Migori and Kiambu counties to present their claims promptly to ensure compensation is processed without delays.
