The National Land Commission (NLC) has issued fresh land acquisition notices affecting property owners in Turkana, Tharaka Nithi, and Isiolo counties. According to a gazette notice dated September 9, the move targets parcels required for major national infrastructure and energy projects.
In the notice, NLC announced that it will delete two parcels initially reserved for the construction of the Itugururu Airstrip in Tharaka Nithi County. The commission will also acquire 19 new parcels and make changes to 16 others related to the project.
Additionally, NLC stated that it is in the process of acquiring 186 parcels of land in Meru and Isiolo counties for the construction of the Isiolo–Kulamawe (A10/B84) Road, a key project expected to improve regional connectivity and trade.
In Turkana County, 34 parcels of land will be acquired to facilitate the Upstream Development, South Lokichar Basin Oil Project. The affected land, currently used for grazing, residential purposes, and oil wells, will be taken over on behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining.
NLC has called on affected individuals and companies to submit their details, including identification documents, land ownership papers, and bank account information, to facilitate timely compensation. Submissions can be made at the NLC headquarters in Ardhi House, Nairobi, or at the Commission’s coordinator’s office in Tharaka Nithi County.
In the same gazette, the commission announced the deletion of five land parcels in Nairobi that were listed for acquisition for the Globe Roundabout Public Transport Terminal project, as well as 13 parcels earmarked for the Embakasi Slip Road upgrade. The deletions will be made on behalf of the Nairobi County Government and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) respectively.
The latest directive highlights NLC’s continued efforts to streamline land acquisition for key national development projects while ensuring fair compensation to affected property owners.
