The National Land Commission (NLC) has reserved more than 46 acres of land for public use in Kiambu and Uasin Gishu counties. The land will benefit schools and hospitals, according to a gazette notice published on September 5.
In Kiambu, Lari Vocational College has been allocated 2.3 hectares. The land will only be used for educational purposes. Kinyogori High School has also received 11.4 hectares, reserved strictly for learning and development.
In Uasin Gishu, two parcels have been set aside for the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). One, measuring 3.6 hectares, will host hospital and related services. The second parcel of 1.3 hectares will be used for residential facilities for staff and other support services.
NLC Chairman Gershom Otachi said the institutions cannot sell, lease, or transfer the land without written approval from the commission. He added that they must protect the land, secure boundaries, and make sure the space is used responsibly.
Each institution will also be required to plant trees. At least 10 percent of the land must be covered with trees and vegetation. This supports the government’s plan to grow national tree cover.
The commission further directed that institutions must prepare a development and management plan within 180 days. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the reservation order.
They must also conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and adopt climate-smart practices. Waste reduction, recycling, and composting are among the measures recommended by NLC.
The commission stressed that proper documentation, monitoring, and reporting on land use will be mandatory. This ensures that the land serves both education and healthcare while also protecting the environment.
