The Kenyan government has launched a new youth empowerment initiative dubbed the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Mtaani, aimed at supporting young people with grants, training, and entrepreneurship opportunities. The project, launched in partnership with the World Bank, seeks to uplift thousands of unemployed youth across the country.
On Monday, President William Ruto directed all Principal Secretaries to spearhead the rollout of the program in all 47 counties as part of the government’s plan to create jobs and promote financial independence among the youth.
What is NYOTA Mtaani?
The NYOTA Mtaani program is designed to create jobs, build skills, and support youth-led enterprises. It targets 100,000 young Kenyans, with 70 beneficiaries per ward from the 1,450 wards nationwide, each set to receive a Ksh.50,000 grant to start or grow their businesses.
How the Program Works
The initiative will train 90,000 youth to gain work experience through job placements with employers and artisans. Additionally, over 600,000 young people will receive training on Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO), enabling them to compete for government tenders reserved for youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
How to Apply for NYOTA Mtaani
Applying for the NYOTA Mtaani grant is simple and can be done from any mobile phone:
- Dial *USSD code 254# (free on all networks).
- Select the “NYOTA” option.
- Enter your personal and educational details.
- Choose your preferred category training, entrepreneurship, or skills recognition.
- Submit and wait for confirmation.
However, applicants who have defaulted on the Hustler Fund will not qualify for NYOTA Mtaani, as the government seeks to prioritize reliable beneficiaries.
This program marks a significant step in Kenya’s youth empowerment agenda, helping young people build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
